Amina Wilfred, an amateur golfer from Abuja’s IBB International Golf and Country Club, on Sunday in Lafia emerged the overall winner at the inaugural Lafia Ladies Open Golf Tournament.
Wilfred won the tournament’s main event, Ladies Handicap 0-28 category, with a final score of 155 at the Lafia Golf Club course.
Her closest challenger was Racheal Danjuma who finished with 163.
Love Mdakera finished with 167, while Blessing Obaje scores 170 and Comfort Adakole 176.
Reacting to her victory, Wilfred gave thanks to God for giving her the opportunity, composure and ability to secure victory.
She promised to continue to work hard to win more tournaments and turn a professional.
“When I came here on Friday, I was determined to win this first Lafia Ladies Open and with God by my side, I won it.
“I thank all those who supported and encouraged me. I also thank the Lafia Golf Club Lady Captain for her support, the Nasarawa state government and other sponsors of this new tournament.
“In spite of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and the economic downturn, the Lady Captain still managed to successfully make this Open tournament a reality. I appreciate her efforts because she really tried. She is a good ambassador of sports,” Wilfred said.
Addressing the golfers during the closing ceremony and award presentations, governor of Nasarawa state, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, who was represented by the deputy governor, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, stated that the tournament has proven to be a huge success.
“In spite of being the first of its kind, this tournament has proven to be a huge success due to the collective effort of everyone involved in organising it.
“I want to congratulate the organisers of this event for attracting all the lady golfers who are here today, and their male counterparts who also came.
“We hope you have all enjoyed yourselves and also enjoyed our beautiful golf course. I want to promise you that this will not be the last of its kind.
“When the Lady Captain came to tell us about this tournament, we gave our full support and we are also considering how we can support with regards to the club house,” he said.
He added that the state government’s full financial support and prompt release of money showed its commitment to sports development in the state.
Speaking also, Lady Captain of the Lafia Golf Club, Asibi Omeri-Ogabo, expressed gratitude to the governor for the support given to the club to host the tournament which she described as a huge success.
“The support given by the governor shows he is a listening and caring governor who is committed to sports development and willing to support initiatives that will have direct impact on the lives of the people of the state. She added.
It would be recall that about 200 amateur golfers, both female and male, had landed in Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital to compete in various events at the 18-hole Lafia Golf Course.
