Members of the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, UNIMEDTH, in Ondo State, have embarked on a 14-day warning strike, to protest non-payment of seven-months salary.
Other grievances of the doctors include non-payment of palliative to House Officers since February, failure to disburse the February Hazard Allowance and shortage of staff resulting from the resignation of doctors from the hospital.
While staging a peaceful protest Tuesday at the UNIMEDTH premises, the doctors vowed to halt activities until their concerns are addressed by government.
Speaking to newsmen during the protest, the President of UNIMEDTH ARD, Dr. John Matthew emphasized that the new members who recently joined the teaching hospital have yet to receive their salaries.
Dr. Matthew who listed other demands of the union, disclosed that there were only 26 members of ARD in the hospital, as against 150 a few months ago.
While demanding full payment of the arrears of salaries owed the resident doctors and payment of February 2024 palliative to house officers, he called on government to quickly address the severe clinical manpower shortage in the institution.
