Musical artistes have been urged to intensify efforts in promoting discipline and moral values in society through music.
Edo State chairman, Performing Musician Association of Nigeria, PMAN, Mr. Willy Eghe-Nova made the appeal while reacting to recent upsurge in kidnapping, killings and other criminal activities in the country.
He implored musicians especially the upcoming ones not to use music for entertainment purpose alone, but also to correct the ills of society.
Mr. Eghe-Nova expressed the belief that using music to educate the people on government policies and to promote moral values such as hard work, sincerity and harmonious living would contribute meaningfully towards addressing crime and criminality.
He observed “Our folk songs are not just for entertainment but to correct the ills in the society and inculcate high sense of discipline and morality in our youths”.
The PMAN chairman recalled the jail break incidents in parts of the country during the #EndSARS protest, pointing out that the development would have been limited if the execution of condemned criminals were done before the prison escape.
Mr. Eghe-Nova who maintained that the jail breaks had contributed to current upsurge in crimes, cautioned against delay in the execution of justice.
“The Judiciary should do something faster than they are doing now. In fact, the enforcement agencies, they need to wake up, so that people would not feel that they can do anything and go away with it. I am sure that once Nigerians realize that once they do anything they would suffer the punishment, that would reduce crime rate in the country, he stated.
The Edo State PMAN chairman called on security agents to ensure the re-arrest of all the criminals who are yet to be rearrested after the jail break which occurred during the #EndSARS protest.
On the lingering herders/farmers crisis, Mr. Eghe-Nova wondered why it is now that herders and farmers are having misunderstanding having lived together for a long time.
He condemned in strong terms the raping of ladies and women by suspected herders, as well as the kidnapping and killings of innocent ones under the pretence of nomadic herding.
Mr. Eghe-Nova called on government to urgently address the farmers/herders crisis in order to prevent the situation from degenerating further.
On the call for Nigerians to carry arms, Mr. Eghe-Nova said he was not in full support of it. He expressed the view that such opportunity would be misused by some Nigerians in the name of trying to provide security for themselves.
He however stated that it would be right for farmers to carry guns for self defence if herders were allow to carry guns to defend themselves and their cattle.
The Edo State PMAN chairman called on Nigerians to expose criminal elements among them by availing security agencies with useful information.
He equally called on security personnel to protect the identity of anyone who volunteered information to them, so as to shield them from being attack by criminally minded ones in the society.
