… Advocacy Group Writes International Community Over Zamfara and Kano Polls
….Warns against Judicial Corrosion and Corruption and Calls for Global Sanctions
A frontline campaign group for strengthening democracy in Nigeria has alerted the international community on the emergent situation regarding the gubernatorial outcomes in Zamfara and Kano States.
The group, Nigeria Democracy Vanguard, addressed correspondences to the Presidents of the United States of America, the President of France and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
The Advocacy group noted in the correspondences submitted to the various embassies that Nigeria’s judiciary was engaged in subversive acts against the determined wishes of the Nigerian electorate in Zamfara and Kano States. The Democracy Vanguard alleged that the judiciary seems to have been dragged into a diabolical plot by the country’s ruling party, the APC, to provide the legal instrumentation for quashing and overthrowing the wishes of the electorate.
According to Democracy Vanguard, Zamfara State presents a profoundly concerning scenario where there are attempts at barefaced political daylight robbery.”
The group further noted that “what was happening in Zamfara State was an unquestionable brazen attempt to nullify the resounding victory of the incumbent Governor in favour of the serving junior federal Minister who was vehemently rejected at the polls”.
The group counseled that what was happening in Nigeria’s electoral scene had corrosive consequences for Democracy in the West African subcontinent.
The group called for global sanctions against notable chieftains of the ruling APC as well as persons within the judiciary who are found involved in machinations to subvert the legitimately expressed wishes of the electorate.
