A 4.1 magnitude earthquake off the Los Angeles County coast brought weak shaking throughout Southern California on New Year Day.
The quake reportedly struck off the coast about 12 miles south of Rancho Palos Verdes and south-southwest of San Pedro at 8:27 on Monday morning.
The tremor had a preliminary magnitude of 4.3 but that was later reduced to 4.1 by the United States Geological Survey, USGS.
Shaking from the quake, which had a depth of just over 7 miles, was felt across the county.
It was learnt that residents of Santa Clarita, Temecula, Mission Viejo, San Bernardino and Catalina Island reported feeling the ground shake.
According to a recent three-year data sample, an average of five earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.0 and 5.0 occur per year in the greater Los Angeles area.
