A 200-level male student of the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, Kwara State, has committed suicide as a result of economic hardship.
The student, from the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences, killed himself at his private residence located at Oke-Odo axis of Tanke community, Ilorin, the state capital.
Sources in the university community, told journalists that the deceased lost his father a few years ago, while his mother, a retired school teacher, had taken over financial responsibility for his academic since.
The deceased’s financial condition reportedly grew worse when he resumed school last year.
The development is said to have made his colleagues raise some funds to pay his tuition fees and buy food items for him.
However, it was learnt that the deceased decided to take a poisonous substance last weekend, just after his roommate had left for lectures, leaving a note which stated his inability to cope with his financial condition.
His roommate was said to have raised the alarm on the incident when they returned from lectures.
A senior administrative officer in the institution, who did not want to be named, confirmed the incident to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday.
The officer described the incident as shocking, noting that the development had thrown the university into a mourning mood.
