The United States Supreme Court has ruled that a controversial ban on TikTok may take effect this weekend.
The court therefore reject an appeal from the social media app’s owners that claimed the ban violated the First Amendment.
The decision followed warnings from the Biden administration that the app posed a grave national security threat because of its ties to China.
Meanwhile, there are a lot of lingering questions about how the ban would work in practice because there’s no precedent for the US government blocking a major social media platform.
Delivering its ruling, the US Apex Court acknowledged that TikTok offers an expansive outlet for expression and means of engagement for 170 million Americans.
It however added that Congress was focused on national security concerns, stressing that that was a deciding factor in how it weighed the case.
