The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has destroyed a large amount of substandard imported products.
The products, which include tires, steel doors, electrical cables, and spark plugs, were destroyed following a quality assessment that revealed they failed to meet Nigeria’s minimum safety and quality standards.
In a statement, the agency pointed out that the exercise aligns with its mandate under the SON Act No. 14 of 2015, which empowers it to regulate and enforce standards for goods in the Nigerian market.
Director-General of SON, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, said the destruction was a necessary step to prevent the circulation of unsafe products that pose a serious risk to public health and safety.
He particularly emphasized the danger of expired tires on Nigerian roads, stressing that tires have a lifespan of four years, after which they can easily burst and cause fatal accidents.
Dr. Okeke also highlighted the impact of improper storage and exposure to extreme temperatures on tire quality.
The SON DG advised consumers to remain vigilant and report suspected substandard products to its nearest office or through the agency’s toll-free number.
