President Bola Tinubu has given approval for the adoption of Tai Solarin University of Education in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a federal university.
This is contained in a press release signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga and made available to newsmen on Sunday.
According to the statement, the president expressed gratitude to the Ogun State Government for inviting the Federal Government to take over the educational assets.
While noting that the move honours the legacies of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr Tai Solarin, Tinubu also recognized the role of the Awujale of Ijebuland in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, seven years after its establishment.
The release pointed out that the decision marks a significant milestone in Ogun State’s educational landscape and reinforces the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing higher education and honouring the legacies of regional icons.
Minimal federal investment would be needed to upgrade TASUED, due to its well-developed infrastructure and academic programs.
Established by the Ogun State Government in 2005, TASUED holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialised university of education.
