Nigerian Boxer Olanrewaju Dies during Fight

A Nigerian boxer, Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju, on Saturday, March 29, 2025, collapsed and died during a fight in Ghana.

The 40-year-old lost consciousness while engaging Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu at Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League.

The Nigerian boxer, who held both national and West African light-heavyweight titles during his career, was ahead on points before he slumped during the encounter, which was held at Bukom Boxing Arena.

Despite efforts to revive him, Olarenwaju succumbed to his injuries, bringing his career to a tragic end.

Olarenwaju’s death adds to the list of Nigerian boxers who lost their lives in recent years.

During the 2022 National Sports Festival in Asaba, Delta State, Chukwuemeka Igboanugo, representing Imo State, was pronounced dead after competing against Prince Gaby Amagor of Anambra State in the 86kg category.

On May 14, 2024, London-based Nigerian boxer Sherif Lawal tragically passed away during his professional debut after competing against Malam Varela at the Harrow Leisure Centre in London.
