Plateau State epidemiologist, Dr. Maren Damala has disclosed that the state recorded 11 confirmed cases of MPOX in 2024.
He made the disclosure at a key stakeholders engagement organised by the Plateau State branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, NRCS, in its efforts to prevent the spread of Monkeypox, MPOX, in the state.
“So far, we have confirmed 11 cases. There were additional suspected cases, but they tested negative. Unfortunately, one fatality has been recorded in the state,” Dr. Damala stated.
He listed ways to prevent MPOX to include avoiding sick animals, whether domestic or wild; maintaining hand and food hygiene and avoiding close contact with infected individuals.
The epidemiologist acknowledged the crucial role of collaborative partners like the Nigerian Red Cross in spreading preventive awareness.
“What the Red Cross is doing is invaluable, particularly in preventive measures. They are educating people on how to protect themselves, encouraging behavioral changes, and promoting disease prevention strategies,” Dr. Damala stated.
Also speaking, the branch chairman of the Red Cross, Nurudeen Ishaq Magaji, emphasized the importance of the engagement after confirmed MPOX cases were traced to five local government areas.
He stated that the initiative was a collaborative effort between the NRCS and the Plateau State Ministry of Health.
While noting that the Red Cross alone cannot prevent MPOX, Magaji called for collective support and collaboration from the public in controlling the disease.
