The Northern Elders Forum, NEF, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in northern Nigeria due to the unabating insecurity challenges.
The body made the call in a statement by its spokesperson, Prof. Abubakar Jiddere.
It condemned the brutal killing of over 20 soldiers in an ambush by terrorists in Bangi, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, describing it as a total collapse of security in Northern Nigeria.
The NEF spokesperson noted that the boldness demonstrated by the terrorists is an indication of a declaration of war against Nigeria and added that northern Nigeria is under siege.
While saying that the Nigerian government has failed abysmally and consistently in its constitutional duty to protect lives and property, the group emphasized that it would no longer accept hollow condolences, tired speeches, or sterile press releases.
The Northern Elders Forum warned that continued federal inaction will provoke open resistance, adding that the legitimacy of any government that cannot or will not protect its citizens is gone.
