The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has reacted to a report making the rounds on social media that it’s chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, is dead.
The reports claimed that Yakubu died in an hospital in London hospital.
Reacting to the development, the Commission in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, described the report as fake.
While noting that Prof. Yakubu is alive, hale and hearty and has not travelled to London in the last two years, the statement appealed to the public to disregard the rumour.
The statement recalled that mischief-makers on the social media carried a similar fake story in 2021, noting that three years later, they are spreading the same rumour again.
It urged those who indulge in originating fake news, as well as those who spread it, to be mindful of its effect not only on the individual but also on the wider society.
