Gunmen Kill Police Sergeant in Edo

Gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers have reportedly killed a police sergeant in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The police sergeant identified as Aminu Yusuf, an orderly to a Chinese expatriate, was killed on July 16, 2025 at about 2:45 pm on First East Circular Road of the metropolis.

According to the report, the incident occurred shortly after the Chinese expatriate had completed a cash withdrawal from a bank in the state capital.

The late police officer was said to have been attached to a company as part of an authorised police assignment.

A source, who did not want his name mentioned said the gunmen who were four in number, also made away with the deceased’s AK-47 rifle (with breech number BD 347851), 30 rounds of ammunition, and an undisclosed amount of money.

The source further disclosed that the deceased and the expatriate’s vehicle were attacked by the gunmen while returning from the bank with a huge sum of money running into millions.

The remains of the police sergeant has been deposited in a mortuary after he was declared dead on arrival at a specialist hospital in Benin City.

The Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, was yet to confirm the incident, as at press time.

Meanwhile, sources in the command stated that the police authorities have launched a manhunt for the attackers and are working to recover both the missing weapon and the stolen funds.
