Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has ordered the deployment of more security personnel to troubled communities in Ovia South West and Etsako East Local Government areas of the state, to check the killing of farmers in the areas.
22 farmers in seven communities in Ovia South West LGA were attacked and killed by suspected Ijaw militants.
Houses and property worth millions of Naira were also reportedly destroyed.
In Okpekpe community in Etsako East LGA, two farmers were killed on Monday, February 24, 2025 by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.
Reacting to the incidents, the governor assured that his administration would work tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for the heinous acts are brought to book.
“We will not tolerate any form of violence or lawlessness in the state. We will work tirelessly to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are brought to justice, and we will do everything in our power to prevent such incidents from happening again in the future.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Edo State residents,” he stated.
While saying that government would work closely with security agencies and traditional leaders to achieve the goal, the governor called on the people of the State to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as they work to address the crisis.
