Edo State Internal Revenue Service, EIRS has condemned the practice of some Unions still engaging in illegal collection of dues and issuing tickets where not appropriate.
A statement titled “Ban on Union dues collection at Haulage fee points in Edo state” and signed by Executive chairman of EIRS, Mr Oladele Bankole-Balogun, the revenue service described the practice as unacceptable.
The statement noted that the EIRS prohibits the collection of union dues at beats designated for haulage fee collection; pointing out that the decision was to streamline operations and enhance the efficiency and transparency in the haulage space.
The EIRS stressed that it is only its revenue collectors that are saddled with the responsibility of collecting the haulage fees through the issuance of the Revenue scratch card, and ensure that haulage fee points also known as beats remain dedicated to their primary purpose.
The EIRS therefore advised unions to adopt alternative methods for collection of dues from their members; stressing that the state government was committed to working with the unions to ensure that there is peace and orderliness in the state.
The EIRS also used the statement to draw the attention of security agencies to the practice for appropriate enforcement and sanctions, and urged stakeholders to take note.
