Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has initiated an amnesty program for cultists in the state to repent, in an attempt to bring peace to the state.
At a meeting with Edo youths in government house, Benin City, Governor Okpebholo assured them that his administration would look into reported cases of police extortion.
He decried the menace of cultism and other related crimes in the state, assuring that he would continue to do all within his power to ensure cultism was reduced to the barest minimum before he leaves office.
The governor pleaded with youth groups not to blackmail security operatives in the discharge of their duties.
On the implementation of the Anti cultism and anti Kidnapping laws which prescribes demolition of houses linked to both activities, the governor vowed to continue to implement the law, assuring that proper investigations are followed before actions are taken.
On his part, Edo State commissioner of police, CP Monday Abonika, assured the youths of measures to curb police harassment, including directing all officers to use name tags and police stickers in their vehicles while on official duties.
Some leaders of various youth groups in the state decried harsh police harassment over the last few months, setting bail at between five hundred thousand to two million Naira, while those who can’t afford the amount are sent to jail.
