The Confederation of African Football, CAF, is to unveil a new trophy on Wednesday ahead of this year’s WAFCON tournament.
The tournament is billed to hold from July 5 to 26 in Morocco.
In a statement on Sunday, CAF disclosed that the new TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Trophy will be launched on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 in Morocco.
According to the statement, the new trophy is part of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s vision to grow and develop women’s football in Africa.
Ahead of this year’s event, the 12-team tournament has seen an upward review in prize money from $975,000 in the previous edition to $2,400,000.
Hosts Morocco are in Group A with Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while 11-time winners Nigeria have been drawn against Botswana, Tunisia, and Algeria.
The tournament’s hosts, Morocco, will meet Zambia in the opening match at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium.
Since 1998, CAF has been hosting the WAFCON, a biannual international women’s football competition, as a means of qualifying African countries for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The tournament which started as a home-and-away qualification competition, got rechristened as a biennial tournament in 1998 and took on its current name as of the 2016 edition.
