Suspected armed herdsmen have allegedly killed and beheaded a middle-aged man, Gabriel Vandefan, on his farm in Uikpam community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
His assailants also allegedly chopped off one of his hands and went away with it.
Many Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were previously evicted from their ancestral homes by roving herders reside in the Uikpam village.
The horrific killing occurred less than a week after the community was thrown into panic following the sound of heavy gunfire near the community’s market square, which caused residents and IDPs to scamper for safety.
According to a community member who gave his name as James, the deceased was attacked after going to his farm, which was close to his home, to harvest millet.
When contacted, spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Udeme Edet, said she was yet to receive any report on the incident.
