The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has confirmed the outbreak of Anthrax in Zamfara State.
A statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations in the ministry, Ben Bem Goong, emphasized the ministry’s dedication to partnering with relevant stakeholders to ensure a prompt and effective response to the outbreak.
The statement calls on stakeholders, especially states bordering Zamfara, to take immediate steps to prevent further spread of the disease.
Anthrax, caused by the Bacillus anthracis bacterium, is a zoonotic disease that can impact various warm-blooded animals, including cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and wildlife, as well as humans.
While Anthrax is preventable through strategies such as risk assessments, surveys, and ring vaccination of susceptible animals, prompt detection and intervention are essential to containing its spread.
Symptoms of Anthrax include Fever, nausea, coughing, vomiting, diarrhoea, sore throat and swollen lymph nodes, headaches, itching and bleeding from major openings.
