Former presidential aide and Peter Obi’s former campaign Director-General, Dr. Doyin Okupe, is dead.
The prominent Nigerian politician reportedly passed away at the age of 72, on Friday morning after a long battle with cancer.
TREND REPORTERS gathered that Okupe was first diagnosed with prostate cancer 16 years ago and later developed sarcoma in his right shoulder.
Sources close to Okupe’s family disclosed that the former presidential aide had been critically ill in the weeks leading up to his demise.
His health was said to have deteriorated significantly, prompting concern among his loved ones and supporters.
Okupe served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He later served as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
In 2022, Okupe was appointed as the Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign for the 2023 election.
He was, however, forced to step down following a court conviction over alleged money laundering.
Born on 22 March 1952 in Iperu in Ogun State, Okupe was the son of a banker, Chief Matthew Adekoya Okupe.
He attended St. Jude’s School in Ebute Metta, Lagos, Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos and the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Oyo State.
