Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, has fixed 9 August 2025 for the conduct of fresh Local Government Council Elections in the state.
The commission’s chairman, retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, announced the date during a stakeholders’ meeting and the official unveiling of the 2025 Local Government Elections timetable and guidelines.
Speaking at the stakeholder’s forum which held at the at the commission’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, Justice Enebeli reaffirmed RSIEC’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, and impartial election.
While urging political parties to adhere to the rules, the RSIEC chairman outlined the commission’s plans for sensitisation programmes and private meetings with political parties to address concerns and enhance the electoral process.
Reacting to last Friday’s Supreme Court judgment which sacked the 23 LGA chairmen, in the state, Justice Enebeli described the judgment as a temporary setback that would ultimately strengthen the commission in preparation for the August 2025 elections.
The stakeholders forum had in attendance leaders of political parties, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security agencies, community-based organisations, the media, civil society groups and Non-Governmental Organisations.
