Pope Francis might consider resigning if his health were to deteriorate significantly.
Italian Cardinal, Gianfranco Ravasi made the observation on Thursday in a radio interview.
Ravasi who described the pope’s condition as complex but not critical, stated that if the pope found himself unable to maintain direct contact with people, he might step down.
In the same vein, French Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline who did not rule out the possibility of the pope resigning, cited speculation that Francis could follow the example of his predecessor in office, Benedict XVI.
It would be recalled that pope Benedict XVI resigned in 2013 and lived a secluded life in the Vatican until he passed away in year 2022.
