The US Department of State is to make an arms sale of $8bn to Israel.
An American official who made this known disclosed that the weapons consignment, which needs approval from Congress, includes Hellfire missiles, artillery shells and other munitions.
In August last year, the US approved the sale of $20bn in fighter jets and other military equipment to Israel.
A source familiar with the sale stated that president Joe Biden has made it clear that Israel has a right to defend its citizens, in accordance with international law and to deter aggression from Iran and its proxy organizations.
The US remains the biggest supplier of arms to Israel, as it has helped build one of the most technologically sophisticated militaries in the world.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), revealed that the US accounted for 69% of Israel’s imports of major conventional arms between 2019 and 2023.
The planned shipment of $8bn worth of arms to Israel is one of a number of steps taken by the Biden administration in recent weeks.
