Edo state governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the payment of seventy-five thousand naira minimum wage to workers in the state.
Governor Okpebholo made the declaration during the celebration of the 2025 workers’ day at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
Governor Okpebholo, who said he remained committed to the welfare and dignity of the workforce in Edo state, noted that the review was necessary considering the challenges faced by workers occasioned by global economic challenges.
He urged the workers to see the upward wage review as a commitment of good faith by the government and carry out their services to the people in the best professional way for the betterment of the state.
Governor Okpebholo also announced the approval to recruit more staff into the health and educational sectors, as well as absolving over 3,000 casual staff under the Edo Star program into the main civil service, as well as the enrollment of pensioners into the State Health Insurance Scheme, among other reforms.
On their parts, the state Chairman TUC comrade Peter Asemota and his NLC counterpart, Comrade Bernard Egwakhide, appreciated the governor for approving various welfare packages for workers since his assumption of office.
They, however, pleaded with the government to look into purchasing CNG buses as staff buses to ease the transportation burden on workers’ salaries.
